IUS Aid Has made a smashing sporting start of the year by early fundraising of Martyr’s appeal. 15 teams across the UK took part in annual Hyderi Cup tournament on 26th March.
At 1pm on 26 March 2016, 15 teams from the North-West of England converged on pitches of ‘Goals’ in Irish Town, Manchester. They came to contend for the highly coveted Hyderi Cup, an annual 5 a-side tournament held to raise funds for IUS AID’s ‘Martyrs Appeal’ project.
It was a heated, competitive tournament and although no serious injuries were incurred, many hearts were broken as one by one the unsuccessful teams were knocked out.
The Giants of Ali, along with ABSOC were the youngest teams to enter and although failed to qualify to quarter finals showed great potential for future tournaments. Iraq FC were the group stage stand outs, winning all their matches, conceding only one goal whilst scoring twenty!
Shiekh FC went through to the quarters edging YallahShabab FC on the ‘goals scored’ rule, by a solitary goal, scored in the dying seconds of a thrilling 4-3 contest.
At 5pm, in torrential rain, the final kicked off between Iraq FC and Mohebban. Both teams fought admirably in an entertaining encounter as spectators cheered on. Despite Mohebbans valiant efforts Iraq FC emerged victorious, winning 2-1 in a closely contested final.
Jubilant scenes filled the Irish Town Goals function room as trophies were presented and the tournament winners celebrated. Ali Raza of Mohebban was announced as ‘Player of the Tournament’.
The event was a huge success raising over £3000 for the ‘Martyrs Appeal’. This would not have been possible without project the lead, Zain Sheikh’s, tireless efforts and the support of all the volunteers who donated their time to make it happen.
