FAQs

When can I donate blood?

You can donate blood all year round. We hold blood donation sessions around the year typically featuring in the summer and autumn.

Where does the blood go?

Blood is sent to hospitals all over the UK to those that are in desperate need of help. The NHS is currently not able to track where individual blood goes but it can be assured that it is used as efficiently as possible.

Who organises this campaign? Are you supported by a mosque or institution?

We are part of the Islamic Unity Society (IUS), a registered UK charity that aims to develop, engage, and grow the young British Muslim community in the UK for generations to come through Islamic values and encourage unity, diversity and integration within society.

I’ve been abroad recently, can i donate blood?

Most countries do not affect blood donation eligibility, however if you have visited a malaria risk zone, you must wait 6 months before donating. The common cases we encounter for these cases are India (except Jammu and Kashmir), Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar.

You can find out further information on https://my.blood.co.uk/KnowledgeBase/Travel.

I’ve got a cold/sore throat. Can I donate?

For health and safety reasons, you are not allowed to donate if you are feeling ill, and hence should cancel your appointment and wait until you have recovered before donating next.

If you have any concerns or are unsure then please call the NHSBT helpline on 0300 123 23 23 or ask one of our campaign volunteers who may be able to assist.

Further information on who can and cannot donate here: http://ius.org.uk/giveblood/who-can-donate/

Can I donate blood whilst fasting?

No, as you will need to eat and drink before donating blood. Being well hydrated is a requirement of donating blood. Please see preparing to give blood for more information.

How can I change my appointment date/time?

If you have any questions or queries on the day you can call the NHSBT on 0300 123 23 23. You can also cancel or change your appointment online on https://my.blood.co.uk/Account/SignIn

Can I bring a friend with me?

Yes, we encourage you to spread the word and help save more lives! However please encourage your friend to also book an appointment. If they are not there to donate blood, then they are still always welcome but we cannot guarantee there will be space for them.

Can I come to a donation session/walk-in without an appointment?

Some donation sessions allow for walk-ins however you may have to wait for longer and there is no guarantee they can accommodate your donation. You should check with your local IHBDC Ambassador or call the NHSBT line on 0300 123 23 23.

Can I donate after outside of IUS organised sessions?

Of course. Men can donate every 3 months, women can donate every 4 months.

Where can I find out more information about your campaign/website?

You can visit https://www.ius.org.uk/giveblood/. Alternatively if you have any further questions you can email us on giveblood@ius.org.uk
